About Litchfield

Litchfield, a small coastal community located on the southern end of South Carolina’s Pawleys Island, is located about halfway between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown. Area attractions for visitors to Litchfield include Huntington Beach State Park and Brookgreen Gardens, both of which offer a variety of outdoor activities and a view at the area’s beautiful scenery.

Litchfield is also home to Litchfield Plantation, which is one of the oldest rice plantations located long the Waccamaw River. This plantation was formed from three land grants of 500 acres in 1710, 420 acres in 1711 and 500 acres in 1712. The original “Plantation House” of Litchfield Plantation was built in 1740. Like many places in South Carolina history, Litchfield Plantation offers a number of ghost stories, all of which center around Dr. Henry Massingberd Tucker, owner of the plantation from 1859 to 1897. Today, the original mansion of Litchfield Plantation is used as a Country Inn, while the original site of the stables is home to a private dining club, The Carriage House Club. The rest of the plantation grounds are in the process of being developed as a master-planned residential community.

Other activities offered in Litchfield include kayak rentals, boat rentals, fishing charters, golfing at a Pawleys Island area golf course or dining at a delicious area restaurant. Also, because of its convenient location just 90 minutes north of historic Charleston and 60 minutes south of popular Myrtle Beach, day trips from Litchfield can be enjoyed by everyone in your family.
